EMDR Intensives: Comprehensive Approach to Trauma Treatment

Overview and benefits of intensive EMDR therapy.

What is an EMDR intensive?

An EMDR intensive session is an extended, focused approach to EMDR therapy that allows for concentrated work on specific concerns. Rather than confining treatment to the traditional 45–60 minute therapy hour, EMDR intensive sessions provide 3–6 hours of dedicated trauma treatment in a single day. This enables us to target specific issues effectively.

For some individuals, traditional weekly therapy works beautifully. However, for others, the structure can create barriers. Factors such as a demanding work or family schedule, distance from your therapist, or the challenge of maintaining momentum when sessions are spaced out weekly can create obstacles. Additionally, insurance limitations often dictate treatment options, as plans typically cover standard-length psychotherapy sessions rather than EMDR intensive sessions.

An EMDR intensive session may be a good fit if you are struggling with:

- PTSD or unresolved traumatic experiences that impact your present life

- Specific phobias or intense fears that exist despite knowing you are safe

- Severe anxiety characterized by persistent worry, avoidance, hypervigilance, or a constant state of being on edge

- Panic attacks, including the fear of experiencing another panic attack

- Distressing memories or triggers that evoke strong emotional or physical reactions

- Negative or “stuck” beliefs like “I’m not safe,” “I’m powerless,” “I’m not good enough,” “I can’t handle this,” or “Something bad is going to happen”

- A particular memory or trigger that you wish to address through focused trauma treatment

- The sensation of understanding the issue intellectually while your emotions or body lag behind

- A feeling that you've made progress through talk therapy, but still have a specific issue that appears unresolved

The intensive format can be advantageous for individuals who have limited time for weekly appointments, find it challenging to incorporate ongoing therapy into their lives, or prefer to dedicate focused sessions to a specific treatment goal.

You don’t need to pinpoint the exact memory tied to your experiences. Part of the EMDR process involves identifying the beliefs, triggers, and patterns contributing to your current symptoms. Since intensive trauma work may not be suitable for everyone, all EMDR intensive sessions begin with screening and preparation to assess whether this format is clinically appropriate for you.

FAQs

What should I expect from my first EMDR intensive sessions as a first-time client?

A typical day of EMDR therapy in an intensive format includes:

• Arrival, check-in, and orientation (30–45 minutes)

• Resource development and stabilization work (45–60 minutes)

• Reprocessing of trauma or grief targets, with brief breaks (90–120 minutes)

• A substantial midday break for meals and rest (45–60 minutes)

• Continued reprocessing in the afternoon (90–120 minutes)

• Integration, closure, and aftercare planning (45–60 minutes)

You are in charge of the pace during EMDR intensive sessions. You can stop, pause, take a break, use the restroom, eat, drink water, or step outside at any time.
